![]() ![]() The painting makes it seem as though the scene has no end, especially with the absence of windows that would interrupt the continuation of the scene. Second Style is also known from its realism, as seen with the many different types of plants and intricate detail of said plants, gazebo, and pathways. In this fresco example, the trees are placed on different levels as the painting continues on. Second Style consisted of illusionist techniques to make the room appear larger. This garden scape is a prime example of Second Style Roman Art. The laurel trees often appear in the background of the frescos throughout the villa. According to the story, she kept the hen for breeding and planted a laurel grove which provided the wreaths worn in the Imperial triumphs. This villa was described as “ad gallinas albas,” which translates into white hens, referencing Augustus’ and Livia’s wedding day in 38 BCE, when an eagle dropped a white hen with a fruited laurel twig in its beak into her lap.
